A beginner's guide to the Moto X Pure Edition

The Moto X line of phones has always been neat, but the new Pure Edition is something everyone can enjoy.

There are so many great Android phones to choose from this year, and for the most part you'll find each great offering appeals to specific kinds of users. For Motorola, it's all about context and helping the user out in every part of you day to day life. The Moto X Pure Edition is the latest and by far the most functional example of this vision, but in order to dig in and truly appreciate what is happening with this phone you're going to need to know a few things.

Here's everything you need for choosing a Moto X Pure Edition, whether you're an Android expert or this is the first time you've considered something with that little M on the back.

1. HARDWARE: SO MANY CHOICES

One of the cool things about Motorola phones is the ability to design the outside yourself through Moto Maker. If you're still on the fence about buying a Moto X Pure Edition, you should head to Moto Maker and check out all of the different ways you can built one. Outside of several amazing color combinations, you can opt for wood panels or even leather for the back of the phone, and it shows up shortly after you order as this totally unique creation you can enjoy.

Outside of the color and material choices, here's what your Moto X Pure Edition looks like under the glass.

Display 5.7-inch IPS TFT LCD display at 2560x1440 resolution
Operating system Android 5.1.1 Lollipop
Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 808
Storage 16GB on board, microSD card up to 128GB
RAM 3GB
Rear camera 21MP
Front camera 5MP
Battery 3000 mAh

2. MOVING IN TO YOUR MOTO X PURE EDITION

Like all Android phones, there are a few things you need to look at when you take the phone out of the box in order to get moved in. The Moto X Pure Edition setup process is quick and painless, but you are going to need to offer up a Google Account login if you want to access the Google Play Store or move your data from your old Android phone.

Once you're done with the core setup of your phone, the Moto X Pure Edition includes a separate set of things you're going to want to do in order to enjoy Moto Voice and Moto Actions. These are huge features in the Moto X arsenal, especially if your work calendar is a big part of your smartphone experience or you've ever needed to get some information from your phone but were unable to touch it. Check these features out immediately!

3. NAVIGATING THE MOTO X PURE EDITION

Using a Moto X Pure Edition is unlike using any other Android phone, due largely to Motorola's included features. The ability to call out to your phone with a phrase of your choosing, even when the screen is off, can be a huge benefit once you learn how to use it. You can also twist the phone in your hand like a screwdriver and quickly access the camera, and even access the flashlight by making a chopping motion in the air. These seem a little strange when reading about them on the page, but in practice with the phone in your hand these features can be fantastic right when you need them.

Taking the time to explore Moto Voice, Moto Gestures, and Moto Actions can often be the difference between the Moto X Pure Edition being a decent phone and being one of the best mobile experiences out there today.

4. USING THE CAMERAS ON THE MOTO X PURE EDITION

Previous iterations of the Moto X have struggled in the camera department, but the Pure Edition has a more-than-capable experience for anyone who likes to take pictures. The 21MP sensor has proven itself capable when compared to the Samsung Galaxy S6, the LG G4, and the OnePlus 2, and in day to day use it's generally fun to play with.

That said, the camera app on the Moto X Pure Edition takes a little getting used to if you've never used a Moto X before. The spartan interface and unusual Settings wheel are unique, but nothing about the experience takes particularly long to get used to. All you need is a little practice, with both the rear and front cameras. Lets be honest, who among us doesn't need more practice taking selfies?

5. YOU'LL PROBABLY WANT A CASE

Your Moto X Pure Edition comes with a clear bumper to help protect your phone without getting in the way of whatever design you came up with on Moto Maker, but it's not going to take you long to figure out that bumper isn't particularly great. It doesn't fit all that well, and the clear plastic can get kind of gross easily.

Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives out there for you, both in bumper and full case form. All you need to do it choose which option suits your needs best.
